Serendipity Sweater
Another new pattern is ready for you! Meet Serendipity Sweater.
This one is for all of you cable lovers here, myself included. Serendipity Sweater is all about textures and cables, from neck to hem, start to finish. Yet the cables are fairly straightforward and easy to remember, so as soon as the cables are all properly established, it’s quite easy to keep track on your progress. Though this absolutely is one of those projects where a good row counter might prove to be very useful!
For a very long time I’ve been loving double seed stitch, or moss stitch, with cables, but now the seed stitch feel so very fresh for some reason. Maybe it’s the need for a little change, maybe I’ve seen more seed stitch around, who knows? But seed stitch is the true champion of this project and the cables are mainly just framing it and letting it shine!
I can still remember my previous cable and seed stitch sweater Seven Wonders Sweater (almost like it was yesterday!), but it’s been almost 8 years since the release of that one! Oh time, you fleeting thing! That sweater gave me enough of seed stitch to last more than 5 years, so I’m sort of excited to see when I get the urge to knit something else with seed stitch after Serrendipity. Does it again take many years?
But let’s take a closer look at Serendipity Sweater! The sweater is knitted in one piece from top down, my go-to way of knitting sweaters for years. You start with a tubular cast-on for a beautiful and rounded look and work your easy ribbing. Then the raglan shaping is established, and the back of the neck is shaped with short rows for a better fit. The cable and texture pattern grows row by row in the yoke section, and the different parts are only separated by single Stockinette stitch columns. Another little thing that I love so very dearly in this sweater.
Then the cables flow all the way to hem and cuff ribbings, and by the time you reach the end (on both sleeves and body) you will most likely know these cable turns even in your sleep!
I chose my all time favorite yarns and colors for my own Serendipity: speckled hazy pink on pink. Pure love! I held together a strand of Isager Silk Mohair and Life in the Long Grass Singles. I’ve had these skeins of Life in the Long Grass Singles in color Noon in my stash for quite a few years and I’ve always loved the color so much. I’ve actually loved it to the point where I really wanted to make something special with the skeins! Almost afraid that none of my ideas were good enough for the yarn!
But now I’m so glad I just casted on! This sweater holds now so many memories, especially from the Vogue Knitting Live event in New York in January 2024. That’s when I made my plans and started the project! This will always hold the memories of that lovely trip.
Now I know it’s unseasonably warm here in Finland (honestly the hottest end of May I can even remember!), but even if you can’t wear your sweater right now (or even start the project), this is one of those sweaters that I know I’ll come back to many years to come!
I hopr you all like Serendipity Sweater as much as I do!
